CALLING ALL FISHERMEN, DIVERS, SNORKELERS, MERMAIDS, AND OCEAN ENTHUSIASTS!
Let’s get together to learn from local experts about the different kinds of marine reserves around Puerto Rico! Get a good understanding of local fishing regulations and how vital it is to follow them to protect these precious reserves and all of the surrounding ocean. Then, listen in as Isla Mar talks about the current projects they are a part of. This is an incredible team to learn from!
“Isla Mar is a husband-wife team of fish biologists Drs. Evan and Chelsea Tuohy who work alongside several biologists and ecologists making up a team of diverse marine specialists. We create and lead field courses for college-aged students, often teaming up with universities to customize a field course for their curriculum. We also focus on educating our island community about ocean conservation issues through workshops, festivals, visual storytelling, student funding and citizen science programs. Aside from marine education, we secure funding to perform our own research on various topics such as coral reef conservation, fisheries management, and marine protected area effectiveness. We wear many hats and we love what we do!”
Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease (SCTLD) is creeping its way around Puerto Rico. Let’s find out if there is anything we can do to help!
Snorkelers and divers welcome!
We will learn about SCTLD from a representative of Isla Mar Research before heading to Tres Palmas Marine Reserve to see how our precious reef is holding up.
INCLUDED: Lesson on coral identification and disease diagnosis.
NOT INCLUDED: Gear rentals, transportation to Tres Palmas
